The SL-ACA Cup will use both Fleet racing for series, and Match Racing for finals.
Occasion is given here to focus on the main differences between these two race formats.
No doubt all ACA Racers entering this competition have perfect knowledge of Right-Of-Way rules (10-11-12-13), their limitations (15-16-17), what rules apply at Marks (18) and at obstructions (19-20). A good knowledge of RRS (or RRSSL) is a key for success, as explained by Eugene Sodwind interviewed by Nber. This is particularly true in Match Racing, , as specific tactics will apply. “I won the series before the start horn” said Eugene.
This article doesn’t intend to debate use of rules in SL Sailing, or how RRSSL compares to RRS, some discussions are running on this topic on .ORG (especially about the use of rule 17 and definition of a proper course). For more information, please refer to: Racing Rules of Sailing in Second Life – RRSSL thread on .ORG.
The aim here is simply to point out the ways in which Fleet and Match Racing differ on several points: definitions, rules, protests, penalties, scoring, judging/umpiring and strategy.
The following tables summarize and tries to give an overview of some of these differences .
(Note: at the time of writing, I don’t know if the Race Committee in charge of the SL-ACA Trophy made some choices already…and still pending is…Will Eugene defend his title? How do the negotiations with your sponsors go Eugene?
