SL Sailing Coach Network

December 9th, 2007 · 10 Comments

SYC has a wonderful “Introduction to Sailing” Class that meets each Sunday at 12:00. It’s a great place for beginners to learn sailing.

However, many new sailors are left with hundreds of questions when they try to take the helm on their own, and it’s likely that many give up in frustration over simple issues, such as how to use the start line, or knowing the difference between SL Wind and Race Wind.

To help fix this problem, we are starting a new Group called the “SL Sailing Coach Network” to offer practical support to SL Sailors.

The ‘Coaches’ will be experienced sailors who are willing to help answer questions from SL members about boats, racing, or any other SL sailing issue. New sailors will be able to see which coaches are online, and then send the coach a question by IM. Coaches don’t have to be experts, they just need to ‘know their way around the dock’ and be willing to steer a new person in the right direction.

If you are willing to serve as a coach, please join the “SL Sailing Coach Network” Group in Second Life. Once the initial coaches are listed, the group will be widely announced to new sailors.

i tend to spot people or get imed by firneds of friends - usually french wanting a few pointers

so dont do it in any ‘official’ capacity - i know there are many Slifers and sailors who do this often invsible coaching - it just happens not to be on the special teaching days

youd be surprised how many stuggle just to rez their new tako - i have lost count of people spending 20 mins wearing it on the hand then detaching it then wearing it again - i cant stand it and have to go over

drag it to the water there on the race line - you get cleaner wind - really yay - and they are off on their adventures

maybe its time for tako for dummies video the real basics narrated by MTW :) and have it on the wall in the club hosues i can help in the new year

that single simple thing could be better explained on a small poster by the tako vendors - i know its obvious to us but we sometimes forget what being a newbies feels like

oh and guess what your quote of the day was hehehe how apt

    Quote of the Day
“The safest road to hell is the gradual one-the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts.” — Clive Staples Lewis

I’m all for it. I’m the perfect person to narrate a Tako for Dummies video.

I owe my SL sailing experience to those people who took the time to help and coach me through all little rough spots i’ve had. Thank god for people who answer questions and coach newbies. Even though I don’t race often, I try to answer “Non-Racing Newbie Questions” as often as I can and have even given an introductory lesson on occasion.
My point is this….helping new people is essential to keep Sailing in SL alive, and the person you help today, is the person that will help others tomorrow.
I love the idea of Mark doing a video on the Tako. It would help put a lot of information in one place and get more people up and running fast. Many new people can’t make the 12 sunday class for one reason or the other and a video like this would be a wonderful way to get them sailing quickly.

Hmmmm. I got an invite to that group yesterday. While I like the idea, there’s simply no group that I could leave right now…

I think Surf’s idea of a video is absolutely, totally fantastic.
We kid about it, but I think we all know it’s not “Sailing for Dummies.”
Anyone who decides they should learn sailing in SL in my opinion just passed the ’smart test.’

(well, actually I can think of a few exceptions, but lets move along)

Surf? I only have one thought…
    (let me phrase this correctly…)

Um, you think maybe… we could ask Natalia Zelmanov to be the spokemodel for the Starboards Learn to Sail video?

I mean, Mark - as always - is my first choice, but he’s really busy a lot. Natalia would look great doing the video in a Surfwidow Sailing Jacket.

I know… I know… Mark would look great too, but hot pink is just not his color.

    hehehe

oh btw i have just made a pink sailing dinghy suit - i was inspired

making a video is relatively simple i mean you could just use text along the bottom and then if someone wants to do a narration on top then fine

the advantage with video is i can do a lot of the in tako shots of huds and wind directions in line with some work i did with stills for Epi - back in the day - when he was race director for sailors cove - we did a slide show so i could simply make those still move so to speak

and then there are long shots that show what the boat is actually doing

there is any number of vids we could do BEACH CAT for dummies :)

fizz for dummies - i could do with watching that myself :( :\ :/

i think something inline with mermaid link post more about getting started and sailing the USS is the way forward we could always do more later

narration is a difficult thing simply because it is often only when the video is done that additional notes can be written and we clearly need someone with a good knowledge of takos and sailing per se

thats not me i think if Jane would like to think up a series or slides i can use for guidance then i could shoot something rough - or rushes - so you could get an idea of the first few mins

i would limit it to 10mins preferably 5

i could put some cheesy lift music in the background with text pointers along the bottom that you could write for each scene

then i can send you or mark the video and you could add additional narration over it which you can send me synced up with the video you are watching - i can remove mistakes and so on and i can over lay that on the original - what do you think :)

i have the big chrissy party this Saturday with club nautique so you better come will LM on Saturday

and then i think Beejee and Abell want to do something around new year plus everyone is busy in RL around this time so think of it as a new years project and this gives you plenty of time to give me a storyboard of scenes you want or would like included

PS also you could have a video lessons page here linked up to youtube :)

people could have a browser window open as they are sailing :) with additional text guidance above and below the video window frame
