Sailing With a M1ssion

Nantucket Yacht Club is tucked away in the Southwest side of the United Sailing Sims. Visitors often need to work a little bit to find NYC, and the club likes it that way. NYC thinks that, independent of where a person lives or what waters they like, new SL people who want to find out about sailing should first stop at Nber Medici’s Sunday “Learn to Sail Class” at Starboards Yacht Club.

For the hardy few who get truly addicted to SL Sailing… NYC understands. If you painted your Tako blue because Cynthia Centaur said that was the fastest color… well, you might have the NYC mentality.

A few months ago Francois Jacques, the NYC Commodore, initiated a Sailing Skills Program on Thursday to meet the needs of intermediate and advanced SL sailors. Bea Woodget, Chaos Mandelbrot, M1sha Dallin, and Mothgirl Dibou have all given presentations and lead discussions about differnt aspects of sailing physics and advanced cruising/ racing skills. The program is pretty unique and strongly encourages participation from all the sailing groups. It could be a template for advances in sailing education bridging the whole SL Sailing community.

Mothgirl talks Sailing SkillsThis week, Francois Jacques asked me to announce another key step in the Sailing Skills program. M1sha Dallin is organizing a series of talks on Intermediate Sailing topics, and will hold regular meeting with interested sailors on Thursdays at 12:00 noon SLT.

According to Francois, “M1sha’s interactive programme on the Basics of Saiing in Second Life is designed to advance a novice from Starboard’s Beginner’s class to Races for Beginners. During the1st session M1sha will teach, demonstrate, and supervise the class in skills including boat navigation, course chart reading, using the mini-map, tiller, raising and loweringsails, and mooring the boat. In the 2nd session, M1sha will teach and demonstrate how to read and respond to wind speed, direction, and shifting using the boat’s vane. Students will also learn to develop quick and accurate response to the Flying Tako’s Info HUD wind readings. M1sha will then lead the class in a fun race or two on a straight forward triangular course, emphasizing basic (and a few more subtle) racing skills.”

M1sha’s talks begin Thursday March 13 at 12:00 noon at the NYC clubhouse in Northport. Don’t miss it!

This is a great example of how the various clubs can complement each other to improve SL sailing.

Are the slides from those presentations available to view online? (If they are homeless I can happily provide them with a home on my site).

Thank you for the billing :-) I’ve now done a few Thursday sessions and no two have been the same. They have had a basic theme but have been altered (substantially) to fit in with the sailing experience of whoever turns up on the day. To make the most of the available time I think I need to get more organised. Probably by splitting my material into several chunks and identifying the target audience; suggested pre-learning; and expected outcomes for each chunk. I can then publish a linked programme so that a potential audience will know what to expect.

The material is being published (slowly) on the wiki. I’ll investigate the media prim concept - it will save a lot of effort uploading slides as textures.

M1sha Dallin’s session yesterday was great!
    M1sha talks Trudeau!
She tailored it to the class and focussed it on Trudeau boats…
I’ll condense the transcript and post it here for people to read as well.

Yes! Somehow I think that’s the very idea.
    Speaking of which, Hans…
Do you think you could find a moment in your busy Thursday schedule to come talk to one of the Sailing Skills Classes?
Francois will even provide free cookies!

We are in the process of including all in-world lessons as pages in our “Sailing Lessons” area here at SLSailing.com. And as M1sha said her lessons will also be on the upcoming SLSailing Wiki. I say upcoming because Cynthia Centaur (who is spearheading the wiki) has not announced it for general distribution yet. I cannot speak for M1sha directly but I bet she would be happy to see her lessons published anywhere SL sailors go to get their information.

    Cookies - I didn’t see any cookies.

Jane sailed off into the sunset with one of the students and I didn’t even get the cookies :-(

Cookies, ohh yes please! I am there!

Would love to take a class (would need to be after the spring Big Cat Cup series though). I will IM you to discuss topics Jane. Perhaps we can even teach RL sailing topics (e.g. anyone want to learn about draft position on the main and genoa?)
