Tugby – An Old Game Revisted
Tugby (some describe it as Rugby in Tugboats) was introduced into the Second Life sailing community by Joepie Korabase a number of years ago. She had made a number of tugboats of various styles all of which came with a MARVELOUS deep-throated horn blast. Using those boats and her scripting skills and her sense of humor, she created Tugby Fields. These could be rezzed and then derezzed in an area and various versions of the field would allow for a scripted game. Her versions usually provided for a match to be played for a specific period of time after which the boats and the puck would derezz automatically. MarkTwain and I were thinking of fun things that we could promote and Tugby came to our minds. I contacted Joepie and she was kind enough to provide me with a new Tugby Field Rezzer. MTW and I began running Tugby games at 8 am SLT on Sundays in Santa Rosa sim. It soon became evident that some changes could be made that would improve game play. With only having a homestead sim available to rezz the field, lag became an issue. Sometimes the field would not re-rezz Tugs after a score was made and even resetting the scripts in the field did not fix the problem.
Mark and I decided to go to a non-scripted version. I deleted the scripts from the Tugby Field and now we do the games manually. Free tugboats are available at the Tugby Dock in Santa Rosa. After you get your boat, you can either edit the boat so that its roof is bright red or bright green OR you can use the unedited version and WEAR a Tugby marker that is also available free at the Tugby Dock. The Tugby Marker when worn marks your Tug as either red or green. We assign people to teams and ask them to go to the end of the field that matches the color of their team. They stay behind a white line until the puck is dropped on the center line. Then both teams madly dash to try to push the puck against the end line of the opposing team. When the puck hits the end line, the team making the score gets one point. Then everyone returns to the end zone and the puck is dropped again. Rather than play to a set time, the team to first score two points wins. After a game is finished, Tuggers return to the dock and get reassigned to a team.
There is an observation platform in Santa Barbara sim that can be used to watch the action. You don’t miss out on the funny chat, because we have installed a chat relay system there. There is a Subscribe-o-Matic on both the Tugby Dock and on the Observation Platform. You can sign up to get notications of games and Tugby updates. Please contact Nber Medici if you would like to be able to SEND messages using the Subscribe-o-Matic. Feel free to use the Santa Rosa Tugby Field to practice.
Now we are starting a Tugby TEAM League. You can read all about it on the Starboards Yacht Club Web Site and the form is there for you to sign up either as a CAPTAIN of a team, or as a team member.
Check it out at the Starboards Yacht Club web site: SYC Web Site
