34th AC: Schedule Overview and the race for budgets
Here is our understanding of the program for the next America’s Cup. You’ll find essential information to see a little clearer in this organization. Below are some comments following the announcement of the commitment of Energy Team.
ACWS: America’s Cup World Series ACCS: America’s Cup Challenger selection Series (aka Louis Vuitton Cup) ACDS: America’s Cup Defender selection Series $$$
Energy Team, 2nd french challenger…a third to come?
Peyron brothers have formalized their registration as challenger for the next America’s Cup. Funding – not yet completed – for a budget of 60 to 75 million euros over three years. They will represent the YCF (Yacht Club de France), the most prestigious french Yacht Club.
After the Aleph / Equipe de France (B. Pacé), this is the second french team to have paid the official fees to register as challenger (25,000 USD).
This is very exciting for the french, but poses several problems: apparently, both teams have failed to agree on a common project. The FFV (French Sailing Federation) has given its label “French Team” to Aleph, and is now in a very embarrassing position. The Peyron brothers are putting together an impressive team to win, with all their experience and their recruits of choice. It will be certainly very difficult for two French teams to gather the necessary budget and this can endanger the two projects. As well as that, a third french syndicate, All4One, a french-german alliance, is also looking for a budget to enter the competition.
In Italia too:
A second Italian Challenger, Venezia Challenge have announced that they have signed an agreement to challenge for the 34th America’s Cup with a Sicilian club (Canottieri Marsala Club). They will become the second America’s cup Challenger from Italy, Challenger of Record Mascalzone Latino, being the first.
About budgets:
Most of the team who are officially registered so far, yet have not even 1/10th of the budget for the America’s Cup. But the interest of a quick registration is to have as soon as March, an AC45 to begin training for the America’s Cup World Series. Any serious project involves bringing together about 75 million euros over three years, say 25 million euros per year. It is likely that many registered teams (many will register at the last minute), fail to raise such a budget, and the America’s Cup could bring a lot of disappointments before it even begins…
Not to mention the logistics, and the cost of a competitive team, the AC72 is a “box”rule, so the costs of R&D to be competitive will be very high. For example, Energy Team intends to assemble a fleet of … 19 multihulls for training purpose! Four Class A, four F18, one D35, an Extreme 40, a G-Class (ex-Orange), two AC45 and two AC72. They hope to add four F25, 1/3 replica scale of future AC72 …

Edito – Broken english
A few days ago, I dared commit two editorials that, finally, I have not published yet.
But recent events and discussions leads me to believe it’s the right time.
You will excuse me for the broken English that follows, and I hope you can understand me anyway.
I invite you to read first:
- In a bad mood?, which reflects some personal sad thoughts
and then read:
- In a good mood!, which is meant to be more constructive, at least opening a debate.
A thread was opened for this purpose in the forum. (http://goo.gl/iHmTL)
