“Match Racing” – Part I: History
In the sport of sailing, match racing is a particularly exciting and increasingly popular form of sailboat racing that encounters growing success. The term match racing has a special meaning: in contrast to fleet racing, a match race is a regatta where two boats go head-to-head in competition against each other. One boat wins, the other looses; experience, fighting spirit and sailing skills are of particular importance. Although the match racing rules and definitions are largely identical to fleet racing rules, they come with a number of significant alterations which create a different tactical game. In addition, match racing uses an umpiring system to resolve racing disputes on the water.

Luffing and Proper Course at the Start

Wednesday April 7th, Boogdolt 2.00pm: another sailboat regatta is about to begin!

The RD (maliciously?) set the wind direction to 80°, putting the pin end of the line so far to windward that boats could barely cross the line on starboard tack; add to this high-skilled furious fanatics mixed with true beginners, and you get all the conditions for the RD to have a busy race!
